Asking for a Recommendation

If you add an award to your account that requires a recommendation, follow these steps to ensure successful completion:
  • Review the list of recommendation categories and the corresponding questions that will be asked of the recommender from the list below. If you do not know anyone who can complete the recommendation in full, you should withdraw your application for the award. 
  • Identify an appropriate recommender, and:
    • ask them for permission to participate in this process
    • confirm their email address and inform them that they will receive an email from awards@nscc.ca requesting their participation
    • remind them of the award deadline
    • ask them to let you know once they have completed the form on your behalf (the system will not notify you automatically). 
  • Complete the recommendation task.

Changing a Recommender 

If, for any reason, your original recommender in unable to complete the task, you can delete the existing Request a Recommendation task and start a new one. 

Waiting for a Recommendation to be Completed

Until your recommendation has been submitted, your application status will show as Pending. It is a good idea to talk to your recommender and have them contact you when they have completed their recommendation. Once the recommendation has been submitted, visit your awards account and submit your application for the award.

Advocacy for Disabilities
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?  
  • Please comment on how the student has demonstrated their determination to overcome barriers associated with their mental health disability.
  • In your view, how has this student used their experience with a mental health disability to positively advocate on behalf of others?

Captain or Chief Engineer​
  • This recommendation needs to be completed by a Captain or Chief Engineer.
  • Please describe this student's work experience on board a vessel.​

Career
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?
  • Please elaborate on the student's commitment to their studies and career objectives.
  • What attributes does the student possess that leads you to believe they will be successful in their chosen career? ​

Character
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?
  • This award is intended to support a student who models strength of character, is a team player, supports inclusion, and shows compassion towards others. From your viewpoint, how do you feel the student exemplifies these attributes? ​
  • Please elaborate on how the student demonstrates their willingness to collaborate and support others as part of a team.

Commitment & Teamwork
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?
  • Please elaborate on the student's commitment to their studies and career objectives.
  • Please comment on the student's ability to work within a team environment.

Community
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity? ​
  • Please share with us how, in your view, the student has demonstrated commitment to their community through volunteerism/extra curricular involvement.
  • Provide us with some specific examples of roles/responsibilities that the student is/has been involved in.

Construction industry​
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?​
  • Please elaborate on the student's commitment to their studies and career objectives in the construction industry.
  • What attributes does the student possess that leads you to believe they will be successful in their chosen career? ​

Economy ​
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?
  • Please elaborate on the student's commitment to their studies and career objectives.
  • In your view, how will this student positively contribute to the economy of Nova Scotia in their profession? ​

Empowering Women ​
  • How long have you known this student and in what capacity?
  • In your view, how does this student demonstrate a commitment to empowering women through education, service and advocacy. ​

Instructor or Employer ​
  • This recommendation needs to be completed by a faculty/instructor or an employer. Please indicate which role best describes you. ​
  • Please elaborate on the student's commitment to their studies and career objectives. ​
  • What attributes does the student possess that leads you to believe they will be successful in their chosen career? ​

Leadership​
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity? ​
  • How has this student positively impacted the lives of others through their demonstrated leadership?​

NSCC Community
  • This recommendation needs to be completed by an individual within the NSCC Community who has witnessed the student's commitment to their success and the impact it had on their NSCC community. Please confirm your role.
  • Please comment on the student's commitment to success and the impact it has on the NSCC community.

NSCC Involvement
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?
  • Please share with us how, in your view, the student has demonstrated commitment to the NSCC community through volunteerism/extra-curricular involvement.
  • Provide us with some specific examples of roles/responsibilities that the student is/has been involved in at NSCC.

Oil & Gas​
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity? ​
  • Please elaborate on the student's commitment to their studies and career objectives in the oil and gas industry.
  • What attributes does the student possess that leads you to believe they will be successful in their chosen career? ​

Teacher & Construction Industry​
  • This recommendation needs to be completed by a teacher or host sponsor. Please indicate which role best describes you.
  • Please describe the student's character and leadership qualities as they relate to a career in the construction industry.

Tim Hortons​
  • This recommendation needs to be completed by a Tim Horton's supervisor. Please confirm your role.
  • A requirement of this bursary is that the applicant must be currently employed at Tim Hortons in Yarmouth or Barrington and be working a minimum of 20 hours per week while attending NSCC Burridge Campus. Can you confirm this to be true?
  • What attributes does the student possess that leads you to believe that they will be successful in their chosen career? ​

Work Ethic & Character​
  • How long have you known the student and in what capacity?
  • Please comment on the student's work ethic and character.
  • What attributes does the student possess that leads you to believe they will be successful in their chosen career? ​
